Dr. B. S. Ajaikumar
Executive Chairman, HealthCare Global Enterprises Ltd.
Dr. Ajaikumar is a doctorpreneur and the Executive Chairman of HealthCare Global Enterprises Ltd. He is a radiation and medical oncologist with over 40 years of experience. A true visionary, he has been actively involved in various initiatives to help patients win over cancer.
Learning the ropes after completing his MBBS from St John’s Medical College, Bangalore, he went on to complete his residency training in oncology from the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, USA.
Dr. Ajaikumar completed his fellowship in radiation and medical oncology from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. While he had the opportunity to continue to practice at MD Anderson Cancer Center, he chose to start a cancer center west of Chicago in 1979. While this center grew well, Dr. Ajaikumar was keen to build a cancer care facility in India. He spent several months in the year monitoring the status of cancer care in India.
As he continued to build his practice in the US, Dr. Ajaikumar founded a not-for-profit hospital in Mysore, Bharath Hospital and Institute of Oncology in 1989. This was instituted largely to meet the needs of patients in Mysore and its surrounding areas. Around the same time, Dr. Ajaikumar, along with a group of oncologists, started the Bangalore Institute of Oncology (BIO). As the center grew, it helped Dr. Ajaikumar understand the nuances of cancer care in India. The requirement was apparent – there was a great unmet demand. The need of the hour was accessibility, affordability, and high quality of cancer care. With this in mind, he moved back to India with his family in 2003 with a vision of expanding the services offered in Bangalore.
Dr. Ajaikumar believed in bringing the hub-and-spoke model to create multiple centers across India that would make cancer care affordable, at the same time, delivering high-quality care by introducing linear accelerators even in Tier2/Tier3 cities. Also, the cornerstone of his vision was the belief that cancer can be treated only one way: the right way, the first time. A vision that has helped scores of patients during the past years. HCG was instrumental in introducing high-end technologies like CyberKnife™ and TrueBeam™. It also brought in advanced bone marrow transplant therapies as well as molecular imaging.
Dr. Ajaikumar believed strongly in end-to-end delivery of cancer care and knew that molecular diagnostics was an essential part of cancer therapies. With this in mind, Dr. Ajaikumar acquired Triesta, a molecular diagnostic lab to help aid his vision. Today, HCG is at the forefront of molecular diagnostics and incorporating genomics to facilitate precision medicine. Another area of interest for Dr. Ajaikumar has been fertility in India. He partnered with Dr. Kamini Rao, under the brand name Milann, and has also established multiple centers across India.
HCG is rapidly expanding, and today has 26 comprehensive cancer care centers. With this success, Dr. Ajaikumar is deeply energized and hopeful to spread this model globally. He eagerly seeks to help patients achieve longer and better lives by providing them the best accessible cancer care treatment. He continues to pursue his passion for increasing and strengthening the network of comprehensive cancer centers across the world, including Africa and Vietnam. Fulfilling his vision as a doctorpreneur, his focus has always been on good patient outcomes, patient safety, and providing better access to quality treatment that is affordable.
Among his other achievements, he has been awarded the prestigious E&Y Start-Up Entrepreneur of the Year Award & the Asian Health Care Leadership Awards. Harvard Business School has published case studies that showcase the exemplary work done by HCG. These include the outcomes on Breast Cancer treatment and value-based medicine as a concept in particular. Dr. Ajaikumar has been the speaker on several occasions at Harvard Business School and Babson College. One of his cherished goals has also been to encourage and mentor other doctors and entrepreneurs in their specialties.
Today, under his able leadership, cancer care in India has seen a paradigm shift and has been completely redefined in its outlook to the chronic disease.
As an individual who truly believes in consciously giving back to society, he has established several NGOs, which have done tremendous developmental work in Gundlupet, Karnataka. His organizations have worked on providing financial aid for needy cancer patients, empowerment of 20,000 women through microfinance, educating 550 children by supporting a local school over the past 20 years, and addressing social ills in society.
HCG’s independent non-partisan think tank Antardhwani was born last year out of Dr. Ajaikumar’s urge for a deeper understanding of the ills in society and the thought of engaging in something more sustainable to bring a change in the society at large. The think tank’s primary focus will be on issues related to health, education, livelihood, and governance in India. It will identify, focus, and work on eliminating the real obstacles to inclusive growth of the society.
Antardhwani is also working towards phased reduction in tobacco farming and helping farmers shift to a safer and economically viable alternative crop. In this endeavor, it has started a first-of-its-kind alternative farming project this year in Karnataka’s Hunsur (Mysore) region on a pilot basis. The pilot project involves a group of 50 tobacco farmers grow alternative crops like sandalwood and seasonal fruits in one acre of their farmlands.
Apart from his charitable work, he enjoys being a marathon runner and is a voracious reader.
